Waitomo is the home of Black Water Rafting, Abseiling into a lost world underground and floating through a glowworm studded subterranean wonderland.  If a little bit of adventure is for you, then a Black Water Rafting trip is a must.  Add more adventrue by choosing one of the tips with an abseil as well as the Black Water Rafting or Cave Tubing.

Kiwi House/Native Bird ParkKiwi NZ Native Bird in Otorohanga

For a truly authentic New Zealand nature experience, don't go past the Otorohanga Kiwi House, Native Bird Park in the heart of the North Island.  The Kiwi house native bird park is operated by the Otorohanga Zoological Society, a non profit organisation decicated to the conservation through New Zealands native wild life through education, display & breeding programs.

Great Bush Walks around Waitomo and Otorohanga

Ruakuri Bush and Scenic Reserve

This bush walk loops throught a forest covered gorge alongside the Waitomo Stream, passing through small cave along the way.  The highlight of the walk is the Ruakuri Natural Tunnel, a spectacular high ceiling cave with the Waitomo Stream flowing into it.  Glow worms illuminate the banks of the track at night. 

Mangapohue Natural Bridge

Mangapohue Natural Bridge is a highlight on the scenic drive from Waitomo Village to Marokopa.  The 5 mingue track to the left is pushchair-friendly and follows a boardwalk through an impressive limestone gorge that brings you underneath a natural bridge.  The 17 metre hight limestone arch, which spans the Mangapohue Stream, is all that remains of an ancient cave system.
